Recent research published in Psychological Medicine stated that patients with psychotic illnesses like schizophrenia are more than twice more likely to develop dementia over time than those without a psychotic condition.

Results from a review and meta-analysis of nearly 13 million participants from nine different countries revealed that the chances of dementia later in life were 2.5 times higher among people with several types of psychotic disorders than those without a condition. This was seen in all patients regardless of the age at which their mental illness started.

Additionally, it was seen that those with psychotic disorders tended to have dementia diagnoses at an early age. Two investigations demonstrated that those with psychotic disorders were more likely to receive a dementia diagnosis as early as their 60s.

The findings emphasize the importance of being alert for and aware of signs of cognitive deterioration in people with psychotic disorders in their middle and later years. Management of overall physical and mental health in this population is essential since people with psychotic disorders are more likely to experience various health issues, including dementia.
